Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia in 1918, after four grueling years on the Western Front, to work as a lighthouse keeper on lonely Janus Rock. Tom brings Isabel, a youthful, courageous, and loving wife, to this lonely island, where the supply boat only comes four times a year and shore vacation is permitted every other year at best. Isabel is tending the grave of her newly lost infant three years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, when she hears a baby’s cries on the breeze. A boat with a dead guy and a living infant has washed ashore on the beach.
Tom, whose immaculate records as a lighthouse keeper have lasted a brutal war, wants to report the deceased man and the infant as soon as possible. Isabel, on the other hand, has brought the small baby to her breast. Despite Tom’s objections, they adopt the child and name her Lucy, but a schism develops between them. Tom and Isabel travel to the mainland when Lucy is two years old, and they are reminded that there are other people in the world… One of them is frantic to find her misplaced child.
M.L. Stedman’s characters are flawed humans struggling to locate their north star in a world of bewildering complexity, still trying to make sense of life in the aftermath of so much tragedy in the war.
