Lesson 1: Bend reality to your advantage by imagining two separate views at the same time.
When Vishen began building Mindvalley, he was always worried about hitting particular income targets. “What was the rise this month?” “Do you think we should go after this market?” He lost track of how to be joyful and have fun for a spell.

When pursuing your passion, it’s necessary to strive for continuous growth, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be happy right now. That’s why rule 6 exists. You’ll have to learn to keep two alternate realities in your thoughts at the same time:

You’re working towards an exciting future.
Right now, you’re in a situation where you have plenty of reasons to be joyful.
This will ensure that you don’t become dissatisfied or lose sight of your long-term objectives. Vishen found that by focusing on his pleasure right now and making fun a bigger part of his day, he was less stressed and had better business results!

Lesson 2: To practice blissipline, concentrate on what’s known as your reverse gap.
Rule 7 serves as a gentle reminder to maintain blissipline. Blissipline is a combination of the words “bliss” and “discipline” that Vishen coined after observing that feelings of bliss, such as those experienced after achieving a major objective, rarely persist long and vanish quickly.

He determined to practice appreciation in a highly rigorous way in order to prolong this sensation and avoid falling into a hedonic treadmill. Sure, you could make a list of a couple things you’re grateful for every day (which is excellent; I’ve been doing it for four years), but Vishen recommends a more powerful practice from entrepreneur Dan Sullivan. The reverse gap is what it’s called.

We normally look forward, which means we consider all of the things and ambitions we wish to achieve. There is a difference between who you are today and who you will be once you achieve those goals. Your forward gap is this. You’ll notice how far you’ve already come – and be a lot happier – if you instead focus on your reverse gap, which is the gap you’ve already closed, the stuff that’s behind you, the things you’ve accomplished, according to Dan.

You can see how this ties to rule 6, because it encourages you to acknowledge where you are right now and how far you still have to go while not putting happiness off to the distant future.

Lesson 3: Make yourself unfuckable by having controllable goals.
Rule 9 is about becoming “unfuckwithable,” which means that no one can stop you from achieving your goals. It will be hard to compromise you, convince you to give up your aspirations for money, or for others to bring you down with their words and deeds if you are unfuckwithable. You are the one person on whom you can (and should) rely.

As James Altucher puts it, you must make yourself the only controller of your dreams. Unfuckability, according to Vishen, has two components:
Setting self-motivated objectives, or goals that you can attain without relying on the feedback, work, or contribution of others (like writing 1,000 words a day as opposed to getting 10,000 readers for your blog).
Recognizing that only you have what it takes to make this happen and accepting full responsibility for everything in your life (including things you can’t control).
