“Koontz is a master of the edge-of-your-seat, paranoid thriller and perhaps the leading American practitioner of the form.”—Newark Star-Ledger

“Koontz is working at his pinnacle, providing terrific entertainment that deals seriously with some of the deepest themes of human existence: the nature of evil, the grip of fate and the power of love.”—Publishers Weekly, Starred Review

“Koontz has always had near-Dickensian powers of description, and an ability to yank us from one page to the next that few novelists can match.” —Los Angeles Times

“An exquisite crafting of the thrilling, the unexplainable, and the personal, with the mirth and whimsy that Koontz throws in seemingly effortlessly just when it’s most needed and least expected.”—Library Journal, starred review Relentless by Dean Koontz PDF

“[A] smoothly spun nail-biter…. Koontz still grabs readers as few other thriller scribes can.”—Booklist

I’m beginning to wonder if Dean Koontz had a life-changing event that forced him to alter his writing style. Or, I’m even half-tempted to believe that he is farming out ideas and having someone else write for him. Relentless is another book in a fairly consistent string of so-so efforts.

The book started well and drew me in pretty quickly. The plot was interesting if not very believable. I liked the characters of Cubby and Penny, although they are the typical ultra-good characters with no bad traits. The character of Milo just annoyed me. I found his superior intelligence and language to be quite unbelievable. I realize that there are child geniuses, but no 6-year old would actually talk like that. If he were 9 or 10, it would have been much more believable. Relentless by Dean Koontz PDF

Other secondary characters were paper thin with ridiculous names (example: Cubby’s agent Hud Jacklight). And don’t get me started on the evil-doers. Koontz’s bad guys are the exact opposite of his good characters. Shearman Waxx (another ridiculous name) is pure evil, almost comically.

There are about 20 pages in the middle of the book that are vintage Koontz. Gruesome murders, hopelessness, terror, incredible detail… Going with the explanation that Koontz has others write his stuff, I would guess that he actually wrote these pages. It’s this section of the book that makes me give this book 3 stars vs. 2 stars.

Again with the lame endings, Dean? The book comes to an abrupt and less than satisfying end. There’s no closure on why the evil doers are doing what they do. And then he uses the book title to make it all sappy and warm and fuzzy. Relentless by Dean Koontz PDF

I used to run to the book store as soon as Dean Koontz published a book. I would read it quickly and be sad when I finished it. Now I wait for the book to be available at the library, and I’m happy I finished the book because I can start something else.
