Personal computers and the public Internet did not even exist back in the days when I got my journalism degree and went to work for newspapers and magazines. But now I am coming out of retirement to hopefully do more photojournalism work in 2020. Lam Thuy Vo’s book provides a well-structured, well-written introduction to the basics of data mining, data processing, data analysis, and data visualization. These are important skills used frequently by many of today’s investigative reporters and other journalists. To get the full benefit from this book, you will need to have at least some minimal experience with the Python programming language, as well as browsers, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and your computer’s operating system. You also will need to be at least basically familiar with spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel and visualization tools such as Google Sheets. Step-by-step examples are provided, and these help smooth and speed up the learning process.
