When Bryan Stevenson founded the Equal Justice Initiative as a young attorney, it was with the goal of helping those who were most in need and in need of defense: the poor, those who had been wrongfully convicted, and the women and children who were imprisoned in the most remote corners of our criminal justice system. Walter McMillian, a young man who was given the death penalty for a notorious murder he insisted he didn’t commit, was one of his first cases. Bryan became entangled in the case’s web of deceit, political scheming, and legal brinksmanship, which permanently altered his perception of mercy and justice.

A moving look into the lives of those he has defended, an unforgettable account of an idealistic, gifted young lawyer’s coming of age, and an inspiring defense of compassion in the pursuit of real justice all come together in Just Mercy.
