Introduction to It Starts with the Egg PDF

It’s critical to provide your eggs with the specific nutrients needed to support embryo development and to avoid the toxins that cause the most harm, whether you’re just starting to think about having a baby, are on the long road of fertility treatments and failed IVF cycles, or have had multiple miscarriages. This book will show you how to do easy things to increase your chances of becoming pregnant and having a healthy kid. It all begins with the egg.

The common wisdom holds that women are born with all of their eggs and that the quality of those eggs deteriorates dramatically as they become older. But it isn’t the end of the narrative. Our eggs are immature cells for the majority of our lives, but in the three to four months leading up to ovulation, they must undergo a tremendous transformation. It expands greatly in size and begins to produce significantly more energy. The egg must next separate and discharge copies of chromosomes in a precise manner. The egg will have chromosomal defects if this procedure goes wrong, which it frequently does. These chromosomal abnormalities are the leading cause of early miscarriages and unsuccessful IVF cycles, as well as the reason why older women have such a difficult time conceiving.

Many women are told there isn’t much they can do to boost egg quality, but new evidence contradicts this belief. The period leading up to ovulation is a vital period during which a variety of events can have a favorable or negative impact on the egg’s quality. These include both damaging and protective effects from additional antioxidants and other minerals, as well as adverse impacts from chemicals such as BPA and phthalates. As a result, you only have a short window of opportunity to improve the quality of your eggs.
This book will lead you through precise tactics that are backed up by solid scientific evidence. Importantly, the recommendations in this book aren’t based on isolated animal research that offer tantalizing indications about the causes and cures for poor egg quality. Individual studies, especially animal or test-tube studies, provide only a limited amount of evidence and should be regarded with caution. Instead, this book is based on a thorough examination of a wide body of medical research, including studies that have been independently verified and include real patients.

If you’re seeing a fertility doctor right now, you may have already been told about vitamins that can help with egg quality.
Some doctors’ recommendations will be more up-to-date and backed up by scientific evidence than others. My purpose in publishing this book is to provide you a tool for figuring out what works and why, so you can make your own educated decisions.
But first, let me tell you how I became obsessed with egg quality science. My mission began with the same fears and concerns that many people dealing with infertility have. I was set to start an IVF round and couldn’t help but wonder, “Will this work?” Will we be able to acquire enough eggs?
Will they be able to develop any viable embryos that can be transferred and result in a pregnancy?
There are so many ways for things to go wrong and so much at stake in any IVF round. Our gestational carrier (or “surrogate”) was also banking on me to generate enough eggs during our IVF cycle. Not only would I have to repeat all of the injections and doctor’s appointments if this cycle failed, but she would as well.

I had gone into the procedure with such optimism, believing that because I was under 30, conceiving with IVF would be simple. Then something unexpected happened. Our reproductive physician diagnosed me with decreased ovarian reserve and advised us that the most aggressive pharmacological treatment would be required to help us conceive. Our chances of getting an embryo to transplant were slim if they were only able to recover a few eggs. I asked our fertility physician if there were any supplements I should take to boost our chances, but he didn’t have any specific recommendations. So I put my molecular biology and biochemistry skills to good use. I set out on a quest to see what the scientific study had to say for myself.
I examined methods of DNA damage and repair, the intricate process of energy production inside cells, and how both processes connect to antioxidants as part of my molecular biology degree. I’d also looked into the complicated process of recombining and physically separating chromosomes in an egg before and after fertilization.
As I read more scientific articles about egg quality, all of the parts I’d learned about years ago began to come together with groundbreaking current findings to form a picture of the many causes of chromosomal defects in eggs and the influence of external circumstances. In a nutshell, the study found a subtle shift in how we think about food.
