Duckworth describes her winding path through teaching, business consulting, and neuroscience, which led to the hypothesis that what really drives success is not genius but a unique blend of passion and long-term perseverance, drawing on her own compelling story as the daughter of a scientist who frequently lamented her lack of intelligence. Duckworth developed her own “character lab” while a professor at the University of Pennsylvania and set out to prove her hypothesis.
She takes the audience on a field trip to see instructors working in some of the most challenging schools, cadets adjusting to life at West Point, and young National Spelling Bee finalists. She also draws fascinating lessons from the past and demonstrates what can be learned from current research on peak performance. Last but not least, she discusses the lessons she’s gained through speaking with a variety of successful people, including Pete Carroll, the coach of the Seattle Seahawks, and Jamie Dimon, CEO of J.P. Morgan.
