“What am I going to do?!!!” I thought to myself as Mr. John went on and on about the allegations.
“Sir please I am not the one, it is not me sir please”
“Lotanna Chibuike, when you meet with the schools disciplinary panel tomorrow, you can explain better. Please leave my office”.
With hot tears pouring out of my large eyes balls, I started trekking to the hostel quickly while wiping them away with already soaked hands. “Who will believe me or even listen to me by this time? How do I explain to any sane person that what they saw was not what they saw?” I was so sure that Senior Frances was smiling in her heart after the emergency assembly. “Oh Dear God what am I going to do?”
So many questions flooded my mind until a voice behind me said “what’s wrong with you girl? You’re bleeding”
I turned around to confirm if my Visitor had truly chosen this moment to visit me. Then I saw an outstretched hand with a long sleeve Barcelona jersey shirt.
“Take it to cover yourself, I guess you are stained. Just tie it on your waist to your hostel. And don’t worry about returning it; I won’t ever need it.”
That hit me like an invisible rock.
“Thank you” I replied tying the shirt around my waist in embarrassment. “Please what is your name so I can thank you again when I see you?”
“My name is Dalu, stay safe, goodnight”.
Dalu! Dalu! Before I could even call out, I saw the young man and two other boys run into the green house male hostel near the administrative block. So Dalu is a green house member, I will thank him tomorrow I said in my mind.
Walking back to my hostel seemed to take forever but I got there at last.
“Lota, what did Mr. John say to you naw? Are you still going to face disciplinary panel? Ah ah, what happened? Whose shirt is this? Why are you bleeding? Why are you tying a shirt?” Cheta had a special way of attacking the attacked with more questions. Her future clients were really in for torture I thought to myself as I sat on my bed.
I really wish I could answer Cheta’s one million questions right now, but I could not. Because answers to her will begat more questions and my mind all of a sudden wasn’t on my problems. I was not even thinking about how my day at the disciplinary panel would go. I just wanted to know who the fine boy in the midst of the darkness was. Really stupid I know, but I started smiling.
That’s when I knew that all the things that never killed me up until this point, could never do so.

“Babe please I’ve already stained my bed, I’m going to bath. I will tell you everything when I get back”. I was already half way out of the corridor heading for the bathroom wing of the bungalow when I heard senior Frances calling me.
“What did Mr. John tell you Lotanna?” she said. I just kept walking like I did not hear a thing. “Lotanna Chibuike I am TALKING to you” of course her talking had heavy stress laid on it but I didn’t even care.
“He didn’t tell me anything”. I replied her still walking.
“Wait o, so he called you to share jokes abi? Thief like you! Mtchewwwwww”
At that moment, I was very ready to rip jaws apart. But knowing that I had never slapped a mosquito before successfully, I resolved to make my points clear in shouting. With sudden courage, I turned around, dropped my bucket, tied my towel to my dress and ran fast to tap her on her back.
“Let me tell you something!” I said in a roaring voice with all my energy fully charged. “I am NOT a thief. I was helping Mary burgle her locker because she said she couldn’t find the key. I cannot understand how people get framed for doing good, but don’t you ever blab such rubbish to me agai…” the again had not even fully dropped when my cheeks received two hot slaps left and right.
“Do I look like your mate?! When did this one start now” senior Frances shouted. “Ss3 girls make una help me see o! Lotanna new student wey never finish one session for FCK dey form levels reach my side”.
I was really wondering where the Ss3 girls she was calling were because no one had shown up and obviously, we could be heard from their dorm because our voices were raised. I turned around to leave like the good girl I am. But believe me, sometimes you have to sacrifice everything; even if it means your towel.
In less than a minute, I turned around and went after senior Frances. Just as she was about to enter her dorm, I untied my towel even before reaching her, and started strangling her from behind.
“We must die today “I shouted!
In fact we die here! I continued as I tightened my grip on the towel.
I want to believe that senior Frances probably took Kong-Fu of Taekwondo classes because her turn around was epic. I saw myself fly up in the air while receiving two heavy kicks on my thighs.
“Fight! Fight! Fight!” the cheers were getting louder from both her mates, and other curious hostel members.
“This girl is mad o; imagine her trying to kill Frances. She has met her match today”. I recognized senior Pamela’s voice but this was not the time because the aim here was ‘not to get beaten’
I lay there receiving blows fresh out of senior Frances rock hard hands. All of a sudden, I remembered that if I did not win this fight, it would be all over for me in this school and probably in life. With the little strength I had, I put my thumb straight into her eyes and she was of course thrown of balance. Seeing that she had lost balance, I got up to give her a fair share of the blows.
To be honest, this is my second fight in life. The first was my legendary primary school fight with my crush Collins. I still wonder till today who borrowed my senses and left me bare to be foolish enough to slap a boy like Collins. Well, we fought, and he hated me till we graduated. But I comforted myself with the fact that he was super cute and tall, and in my mind I felt our children would be lucky in the near future; the world they say is a small place so I believed that time would bring Collins back. Oh the dreams! Because time only put me fist to fist with senior Frances.
Senior Frances however, was nothing near my crush. She was just an ugly girl with lean hips and a gravel face trying to make my life miserable so she deserved every bit of what was happening.
“Lota stop! Matron is coming”. I heard Cheta shout in the midst of those entertained by our fight. It hit me because I was already in a lot of trouble and I was not prepared to face two panels in one day.

Remembering quickly that mama matron only listens to who reports first, I ran off quickly despite the tight grip senior Frances had on my leg, to go and report myself to matron. Thank God the fight wasn’t up to five minutes so it was early to lay complaint.
I was defeated in the fight sadly, but the fight was not over yet; till I said so.

    #EpisodeThree…
“Mummy matron” I shouted, racing towards her room which was just beside The Js1 and Js2 dormitory.
“Ma, please I want to report myself to you. Ma, senior Frances slapped me so I retaliated and we started fighting. I’m sorry ma” I said panting heavily from all that fighting and running.
“Well, you know I like Godly students who take responsibility for their actions. What you have done is good, but why would Frances slap you; that silly girl”. She said unlocking her door.
“Tell her to see me now” she said, “You can go”.
I was sure glad I got to tell my tales of woe and position the truth to favor myself. Call it a lie, but the truth is multifaceted so we all chose the face that suits us the most. With this action, I could go take a shower, and rest for tomorrow.
Senior Frances will hear from matron at the grassland ( a large field of grasses with thorns) or the pit of hell (the boys toilet behind Js2 block that was forever dirty and so difficult to wash). These were the ultimate punishment spots for wrong doers. Senior Frances had done me wrong so she deserved a clean spot inside the pit of hell I said to myself going to finally take that bath.
The Timekeeper was really late today because my alarm even rang before she rang the bell. We could hear Senior Odili ringing his own bell from Green house boy’s hostel so everyone of course had to get up and assemble in their house courtyard for devotion.
All through devotion, many minds were never present because the real hustle for the day was about to begin after the last amen was said. The rush to enter your room and secure your bucket, the struggle of fetching water without interruptions from higher authority’s, getting a good bathing spot, and least I forget, leaving the hostel before 7:00am. This was our life at Favored College Kado, Abuja.

Of course I had my life mapped out before I left for devotion, so after the last amen, I dashed into my room to execute my plans. I prepared and left the hostel by 6:47am according to my G-Shock wristwatch, and I went straight to my class to enjoy some solitude before Dele the class gateman would arrive.
The journey from my hostel to class was not far. What made it far was the sacred passage of Blue house male hostel before entering the class gates. In fact, when I came to FCK newly, rumor had it that most girls made sure to jiggle their booties when passing blue house hostel because boys of course, will be boys and will hover around the hostel gates just to get a glimpse of sisters with bright futures behind them. Today however, was not the day to sell market so I walked pass their hostel swiftly and entered the senior class area gates.
The architectural design of my school was something else. Js1, Js2 and Js3 blocks formed a U shape, and then the staff room block covered the U making it a box. Senior Square was like that, but Ss3 block was in between Ss1 and Ss2, then directly opposite the staff room for easy monitoring according to the principal. I got to my class just in time to settle down and relax before all the noise.
As I walked into the class, I saw “Dalu” standing by the window facing the door with senior Jay. Do not get me wrong, Ray-Jay were part of the HI boys at our school. The Handsome and Intelligent boys were every girls crush in our school. But little did I not know that the savior God sent to me last night was senior Ray.

Senior Ray was beyond fine, intelligent and sporty; he was a child of God. He was the assistant chapel prefect if that told you anything. God is however, not a God of partiality so he doesn’t give one person everything. That was so clear when he gave Raymond a very very horrible singing voice. Just to highlight one of the many talents he lacked. He couldn’t dance to save his life; he was a horrible artist, and yes! He had a big head. That might explain his intelligence I guess.
“Good morning Lotanna, Mr. John sent us to come and call you” he said looking at me in an unsure way.
I was really wondering how Mr. John got to know that I was heading to class because since I came to this school, this was my earliest arrival time. As if he was reading my mind, he quickly said “Dele your class captain saw you passing his hostel so he apparently told Mr. John. I think you should see him early so you’ll be able to plan for your hearing”.
“Hearing kwa!” I said to myself. Somebody that hears this will think I am a hardened criminal. The person will not understand that I was framed for theft and not just theft from anybody, but Senator Sanusi’s only daughter Mary. Mary was one of those girls people tried not to mess with because even pastor Tola the owner of FCK, worshipped her father. He father has been the only PTA chairman since the inception of our school in 2004, and even when he won the senatorial seat, he still remained the figure head. But of course Mrs. Ajunwa was the PTA chairman all could see.
I was framed for theft in the best way ever because the CCTV cam caught me burgling a locker; a locker the owner asked me to burgle because she could not find the key, and taking out some provisions the owner had permitted me to. As a sharp girl that had lived with an aristo aunty, I knew many tricks and gimmicks so I gladly accepted the offer. For what? For a pack of cornflakes and milk that was used to confirm the theft because I took them out of the locker.
I knew that I was not going to see Mr. John the labor master because he would make things worse for me. But all the same, I had to thank senior Ray for his kindness.

“Thank you senior Ray, I will go to see him now” I lied. Then it occurred to me that he told me a different name entirely yesterday, so I decide to ask just as senior Jay had left the class.
“Senior Ray, you told me that your name is Dalu yesterday when I asked. Why didn’t you tell me a name I could recognize? I was only able to recognize you this morning because your back view is the same” I said adjusting my beret.
“There was no need to add to your problems” he said with a sheepish smile.
“Mr. John had already put you in a bad place, so feeling embarrassed about the whole thing was just not right. Plus I have six sisters; I’m the last born. I know these things”.
“Thank you” I replied with a warm smile
‘I am really grateful. I will return your shirt soon” I said with confidence.
“When I give, I don’t take back. God said freely were you given, and freely you shall give. I wish you all the best with your hearing, trial or whatever the panel’s plans are. You don’t look like a thief, so I’m sure God will vindicate you. Have a nice day Lotanna” he said leaving the class.
Wow! Ok I knew he was a child of God oh, but he had said like a couple of things God related in such a little time. He even knew my name was Lotanna not just the regular Lota people shout everywhere. I don’t know why his wishes meant a lot, but I was thankful to God for people like him who understood and could see that somebody like me could not degrade herself by stealing.
The day was so fast and in a couple of minutes, it was assembly time. The hymn “Abide with me” really ministered to my soul because it is only when you are in trouble that you will realize that you are all alone and you need a presence greater than yours to make everything alright.
“Help of the helpless Lord abide with me” senior Jemima sang in her sonorous voice. As the school Nightingale, she led all song, all hymns, all anthems; the young lady sang them all. For her to have won the FCK annual music competition that had judges from Project Fame, Senegal Music Academy and Soweto Gospel choir, she had to be good. And so she was because the melody in her voice was really helpful to me today.

From first period till short break I was not concentrating. I couldn’t even go for morning breakfast by 10 because I knew well that I had no appetite whatsoever. Cheta tried to convince me but when she saw I was not ready to give in, she left with the other Cheta and Gold.
The endless classes continued till the alarm I set for 11: 55 rang. I quickly excused myself from mummy Adewunmi’s Food and Nutrition class and headed for the principal’s office so that I could proceed to the panel room and face the matter at hand.
I got to the office quickly and I was carefully to button my shirt to the last button and adjust my tie to start from my neck, not midway my chest as usual.
“Mrs. Tamuno, good morning. I am here to see the”
“The principal for your trial” she said with a look of disgust on her face.
“Sit down there and wait for him, he is in a meeting with the disciplinary panel; he will attend to you soon” she said pointing to the plastic seat near the door of the office.
The next thing I heard after a few minutes was “People wey dey steal dey go? HELLFIRE! HELLFIREeeee! HELLFIRE! Where dem belong”. Was I hearing right or was Mrs. Tamuno using my predicament to channel her inner Beyoncé? How petty of an adult seriously. Did I steal from her? I asked myself. In fact, did I steal?
I sat there trying hard to relax, but trust me her ugly Warri voice was compounding my problems and oh! Her scale running was on a whole different level. Let’s not even talk about her change of keys because no keyboardist who learned under Beethoven and friends can play the notes she was hitting.
After a while of waiting, I heard “He has finished. You can now go in. But please my dear, ask your parents for anything you need; don’t steal from others you hear? God will provide for you” she said with the look of an evangelist who just shared a life changing message with a criminal sentenced to life imprisonment.

God had answered my prayers and my ears were no longer suffering so I thanked her and went into the office.
Members of the panel were with the Principal, but depending on your offence, the members of the panel will differ. As a good student who never broke the rules, I never had an experience with the panel unlike Habiba who began to call the panel her committee of friends due to her numerous meetings with them.
I entered the office and looked at the panels members. It was a 10 man panel and Mrs. Ajunwa the PTA chairman was there of course, but one face on the panel shocked me. I greeted everyone but was quick to notice a pair of eyes avoiding mine.
Senior Raymond was a member of the panel.

In life, I have always tried to believe the part of the bible that says “all things work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose” so I handle everything that comes my way with this mindset.
However, today’s case was different. Was this not the same because I could not understand Senior Raymond (Ray) or Dalu; whichever he calls himself, that pretended like he did not even know what panel I was facing? Did he not know that he was on that Panel because the case happened on Tuesday; today is Friday. Meaning that the panel members met both on Thursday and just now? Was that why he was able to meet me leaving Mr. Johns office after night prep? My lord, this was just a really confusing time for me.
“Lotanna Chimuanya Chibuike, I am sure you know why you are here?” Mrs. Ajunwa said crossing her legs.
“No ma, I do not know” I replied.
“How can you not know?!” Mr. Nabase shouted back. “Are you not here because you stole from Mary Sanusi? Or am I lying? He said more calmly.
“Mr. Nabase, it is best for us to move to the panel room to address this issue properly the principal said standing up.
This was my first time of entering the principal’s office so I never knew that there was a door beside his bookshelf that led to the panel room. Truly, the room looked like a mini court.
The end of the room had a small cage; or should I say cell, to detain offenders tried and proven guilty. Amidst all this, I could not stop starring at senior Raymond and wondering how he became a part of my accusers.
The Principal, the vice Principal Academics, The vice Principal Administrative, Mrs. Ajunwa, Mr. Nabase, Senior Raymond, The head boy and three other teachers I had never seen before but recognized as teachers because of their identity cards, filed into the room and I followed suit with Mrs. Tamuno behind me.

The room had a high platform with 3 seats. The Principal sat in the middle, the vice Principal Academics on the right, and the vice Principal Administrative on the left.
There was a small section of seven seats where other members of the panel sat which was directly facing the small box I was made to stand in. The rest of room was blank, except for the fact that it had three long benches and then I could sight the mini cell from where Mrs. Tamuno led me to stand. After directing me to the witness box as I call it, she proceeded to sit on one of the long benches so she could watch the trial.
I just hoped in my heart that she would not break into one of her horrible songs again because I might certainly go deaf this time.
There was gavel. Wow! These people were very serious about this trial issue. I had never heard of any secondary school with this type of facilities. I even felt tricked on behalf of my parents because a courtroom was not part of the facilities listed on the flier shared to us. Well, that was not the issue. The matter on ground was that my trial was starting.
“Tell us your name and why you think you are here” the Principal said.
I was hesitant to reply because the PTA chairman had just called my full names so why did I still need to do a formal introduction of myself. Anyway, I replied all the same.
“My name is Lotanna Chimuanya Chibuike. I think I am here because I helped a friend whose locker keys got missing to burgle her lockers so she could have access to her provisions in the locker, and change the locks”.
“You think?” he said looking at me with his glasses resting on his nostrils.
“No sir, I am sure” I replied.
“Lotanna” Mrs. Ajunwa said standing up from her seat like a prosecutor ready to bombard the defendant with questions, “On Tuesday the 17th of November, the CCTV cameras installed in the hostel had a tape of you burgling a student’s locker true or false?”

    “True” I replied.
“On that same day” she continued, “you took away a packet of Kellogg’s Cornflakes and a sachet of 400grams Peak milk, true or false?”
    “True” I replied.
“That will be all Sir” she said to the principal and returned to her seat.
Trust me, I have watched numerous law and crime movies but I never saw myself acting in one of them. But here I was, at the center of a new one; unreleased, still in the making. In those movies, people always had the rights to attorneys, or attorneys were assigned to them by the honorable court.
“Lotanna stop dreaming” I said to myself. This is a trial, not an honorable court.
“Lotanna’s defendant may now come up to speak” the Vice Principal Administrative said relaxing her hands on the table.
What! What did I just hear?! This trial was even better than I thought. So I had an attorney all along I smiled. Who could it be anyway because the person had not even met me to discuss my case?
Just them, I saw Senior Raymond stepping out of where the other panel members were seated. He came out taking the same stance as Mrs. Ajunwa and began to speak.
“Good Afternoon Members of the FCK Disciplinary Panel. My name is Raymond Chidalu Okike. I am the assistant chapel prefect of the school, and I appreciate the opportunity given to me to represent a student before this honorable panel. I will like to ask some crucial question to the student in question and Mr. Nabase who received the CCTV footage and the complaint from the student allegedly stolen from”.
Oh! My heart was filled with great joy. In fact, I wished right here that our English teacher will give us the assignment of writing an essay on “A day I can never forget” because today, was really a day to remember.
“You may go ahead” the principal said.

‘Lotanna” he said clearing his throat, a CCTV footage of you burgling a locker in dormitory three of the pink house female hostel was found by the security operatives and taken to Mr. Nabase. I want to ask you a question. So answer me truthfully and to the best of your knowledge. What exactly happened that day?
My heart sunk. All eyes were on me and I knew I had to start my story from the beginning.
“On Monday night, I came back from night prep and heard Mary an SS1A member telling Cheta and Gold; my friends that she could not find her locker keys and she had to get a few things from her locker. Cheta quickly told her that it would be best to burgle the locker and change the locks because it would be hard to recover her keys, based on where she lost them. Gold also added that she knew someone who could help her break the locks neatly so she could manage it till she installed new ones.
Just then, I walked in. Mary immediately met me to narrate her story so I agreed to help her. Just before she left, I asked her for a commission jokingly, telling her that nothing went for anything and she was so quick to say “Okay then you can take a packet of cornflakes and a sachet of milk out of the locker when you burgle it”. I was happy when she said this because I did not imagine that she would take me seriously.
So the next day, we agreed that in order not to drag attention to ourselves, it was best to leave the hostel a bit later than 7:00pm which is prep time, to do the work. She was supposed to wait for me outside our dormitory, but I was surprised that after I had done the breaking, taken the items she gave me for commission, kept them in my own locker and taken my books to meet her outside so we could proceed for prep, she was no longer there. I went to her class in anger immediately I got to the school block and asked her why she left me behind. She said she had to return a note she borrowed so I waved it away.

I was so surprised when Mr. John and Mr. Nabase came to my class to call me out and they began to question me strangely. I was surprised at how they knew all that transpired in the hostel but what gave me greater shock was how they came to the conclusion of the fact that I stole from Mary.
Mr. John later called me yesterday night for “A Questioning Session” according to him, and told me that I would be meeting with the disciplinary panel today. That is all that happened” I said bending down my head and adjusting the pleats of my skirt.
“Thank you Lotanna” Senior Raymond said turning to the other panel members.
“Mr. Nabase” he said pacing around with his hands akimbo, ‘Who brought this theft issue to your attention because you are neither the matron nor the house mistress or even the house master of that house.”
“Well, two students; Frances and Leylani, came to my office to report that they saw a girl stealing from a locker they recognized as Mary Sanusi’s locker. And that they saw her take the things and lock up in her own locker”.
Wow! At this point I was beyond shocked. So senior Frances was part of this master plan. Senior Leylani too. This world was indeed a terrible place.
“Ok sir, thank you” senior Raymond replied.
“Members of the disciplinary panel, I want to start by saying that Lotanna Chibuike is not guilty of the theft charges against her. I will give my reasons for saying so.” He turned around and began to speak.
“Reason number one. How did the mentioned students know the locker was for Mary Sanusi? They are Ss3 students who obviously are not in the same room with the young ladies in question so how did they know?. Does this whole thing not sound like a plan to implicate a student with excellent academic records?

Reasons number two. Why has Mary Sanusi refused to say anything about this whole issue since it began on Tuesday night? Why was she not shocked when she was told that her locker was burgled because the normal reaction of every student whose property has been tampered with is a shout, an exclamation, and for girls like Mary, tears. Why did she look so indifferent when Mr. Nabase called her to break the news?
Reasons number three. No thief and I repeat no thief keeps stolen goods at a place of easy access. If Lotanna stole those items, she would not have kept it with pride in her locker, knowing full well that Mary’s initials MDS were on the packet of cornflakes in red marker. No thief is that foolish.
Reasons number four. How did Frances and Leylani come up with the idea of checking the security footage immediately? And why was their initial statement I read at Mr. Nabase’s office, different from the statement given to Mrs. Ajunwa after they had all watched the footage.
Sir, I could go on and on with the many glaring reasons why Lotanna is not the thief. As a matter of fact, there was no theft. This just seems to me as a matter girlish jealousy and foolishness, and a case of defama….”
“Thank you Raymond, you may now go back to your seat” the Vice principal Administrative cut in and said.
“Sir” she said turning to the vice principal academics, “what do you have to say about Lotanna’s statement, and all that Raymond had to say?”
Mhmm mhmmm he cleared his throat. “Well, the young man put up a really good argument. He asked a lot of questions and the answers finally point to his conclusion of the matter” he said rubbing his head. “ there is no doubt that after all we have heard from both Lotanna and Raymond today, it simply declares the accused student innocent and puts the schemers in trouble with the school authorities” he said writing down something on a piece of paper.
    “Mrs. Tamuno” he called out

“Yes sir’ she relied trying to race to the podium where they were seated, “please take this sheet of paper and pass to all the members of the panel. They know what to do. When they are done, give it to the principal so he can give the last say on this issue; school will soon be over”.
I had not even realized that the time was almost two thirty. I had been here since 12:00pm; well give or take 1:00pm when the trial actually began. So far so good I was beyond thankful to God that everything was working in my favor.
“Here it is sir” Mrs. Tamuno said dropping the paper in front of the principal who adjusted his glasses to examine what was in front of him properly.
“Lotanna, you must be a really good girl because every member of the panel has voted you innocent” he said slowly.
“You are now free to go and sin no more; if you were sinning” he said laughingly.
“I am sure it is time for lunch. Go and have your lunch he said standing up.
He hit the gavel and said “All rise” and every member of the panel got up and recited a few lines I found funny but deep.
“Judge not, so that you will not be judged
But if we do not judge, the wrong doers will go free
And the just will be punished.
For the authority of man is nothing without the power of God.
A panel to correct and redirect is what we are,
A group of disciplinarians is what we represent”.

After they said this, they filed out to leave one after the other chatting about what just happened and how much of a good Lawyer senior Raymond would make in the future. I really wanted to see the look on Mrs. Tamuno’s face and hear her new song because I was sure the result of the trial will give her inspiration; but sadly, she left immediately after the principal and I didn’t get to see her when I went into the office.

“Lotanna!” I heard a voice call out. It was a familiar voice but I was not seeing the face until someone tapped me from behind.
“Lotanna, hope the trial went well?” senior Ray asked smiling.
It was just a reflex action and I did not know when I hugged him and said “Thank you so much, God bless you”.
The next thing I heard was “God will always save his children”.
    And then I woke up.
I had fainted at the panel the moment Mrs. Ajunwa began to question me and I was in the clinic receiving medical attention.
