Greg Heffley and his family have been living in his grandmother’s basement for two months as a result of the events of Wrecking Ball, and they are becoming bored. The Heffleys can’t afford a luxurious vacation, but they talk about other family holidays they might be able to afford. Greg’s family receives a call from his great-grandmother, requesting them to take his uncle’s camper out of her driveway since they are unable to make a decision. The family discovers that instead of spending money on restaurants and motels, they may vacation in the camper.
The family sets out on the road after purchasing supplies and cleaning the camper. They make various stops, including an unintentional swim in a fish hatchery, an activity center, and a National Forest.
Greg’s mother wants to vacation somewhere with more people, so they pay to stay in a fancy RV campground for a week. Greg walks throughout the grounds, checking out the showers, swimming pool, and “deluxe” campsites, which include satellite dishes and even lawns to maintain.
The Heffleys go canoeing in the site’s lake the next day, where youngsters hurl watermelons at them. Greg encounters a gang of boys who have been going to the camping for years, led by a child named “Juicebox.” They get along, and the guys demonstrate how much fun they had at camp. The youths who had been bothering the Heffleys then launch watermelons at the lads. The lads’ plan to ambush the teenagers by spraying them with water guns is revealed by Juicebox. They carry out their plan, but they are forced to flee as the teenagers pursue them. The boys reload their squirt guns with ketchup and cola and spray the teenagers once again, attracting bees that sting them. The boys flee and hide, having succeeded in their goal.
The next day, Greg learns that the other boys were apprehended by the camp director, who forced them to clean the snack shack with toothbrushes (which the lads had soiled when spraying their squirt guns). Greg is being blamed by Juicebox, but the director is unable to locate him.
The family goes to the camp’s pool to swim, but they have to leave as lightning strikes. They quickly discover that the bridge that connects the grounds to the outside world was struck by lightning and is now impassable. Because the bridge is out of commission, campers become desperate and rowdy, plundering the camp shop, stealing water from showers, and even tipping RVs. The Heffleys decide to drive over the river that flows beneath the bridge since they don’t want to stay any longer. However, they are washed downstream, where the camper is snagged in the bridge’s missing portion. The remainder of the campers drove right over the Heffleys’ RV, leaving them alone at the campsite. They can spend their last day at the campground, having fun at the lake and eating better meals than they have all trip because they have the place to themselves. Greg focuses on the fact that he had a few nice experiences, but wishes he hadn’t had to deal with so much stress.
But things take an unexpected turn, and they find themselves stranded at an RV park that’s not exactly a summertime paradise. When the skies open up and the water starts to rise, the Heffleys wonder if they can save their vacation—or if they’re already in too deep.
