She holds the William H. and Patricia W. Child Presidential Endowed Chair in Radiology at the University of Utah.
Professor Osborn received her B.A. and M.D. from Stanford University, where she also completed her residency in diagnostic radiology. She joined the faculty at the University of Utah School of Medicine in 1974 and spent her first three years as a James Picker Advanced Academic Fellow in Neuroradiology.A world-acclaimed neuroradiologist, she is the author of several texts that are considered the definitive references in her field. Her comprehensive teaching textbook, ‘Diagnostic Neuroradiology’, won the 1995 American Publishers Association award as the Best Textbook in Clinical Medicine. Her other texts have been equally acclaimed. They include ‘Diagnostic Cerebral Angiography’, the bestseller ‘Diagnostic Imaging: Brain’ and ‘Diagnostic and Surgical Imaging Anatomy: Brain, Spine, Head and Neck’, which received First Prize in the 2007 British Medical Association’s annual Medical Book Competition.
Professor Osborn was cited as one of the ’20 Most Influential’ people in radiology by Diagnostic Imaging in its November 2002 issue, and was also subsequently profiled in the widely-read trade publication as one of four innovative educators inspiring a generation of radiologists to excel in research, clinical skill, and leadership.
She has published over 20 books and more than 120 scientific articles. She is editor-in-chief of the Yearbook of Diagnostic Radiology. She has given over 110 invited lectures all over the world including China, Japan, Korea, Australia, India, South Africa, and Saudi Arabia. Finally, she has served as Visiting Professor at many of the world’s premier medical institutions including Harvard, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins Universities and the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden.
Her achievements have earned her the Gold Medal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), where she served as First Vice-President and Chair of the Research and Education Foundation Board of Trustees. She has also received Honorary Membership from a number of international radiology professional societies, the Beclere medal from the International Society of Radiology, the Marie Curie Award from the American Association of Women in Radiology and Gold Medals from the Asian-Oceanian Congress of Radiology, the Turkish Society of Radiology, and the Federation of Mexican Societies of Radiology, among many others.
Last but not least, she was the first woman to be elected President of the American Society of Neuroradiology, the largest subspecialty society in radiology.
