After binge-watching the Netflix series Bridgerton, I vowed to read all of the Bridgerton books as soon as possible! When word of the show began to spread, I read The Duke and I. I didn’t love The Duke and I, but I enjoyed it enough to consider reading the rest of the series; nevertheless, I decided to wait and see how the play progressed before returning to the Bridgerton books.

Well, I fell in love with the series and grabbed a copy of The Viscount Who Loved Me (Anthony’s story), which was fantastic. For the time being, Anthony Bridgerton will most likely be my favorite romantic hero. I had downloaded all of the Bridgerton novels and resolved to read them in rapid succession before I had even finished the second book.

And I did read them! While the program portrays Benedict as sexually ambiguous at this point, he is very obviously a heterosexual guy in this book, while being the least memorable of the Bridgerton clan. Nonetheless, I was looking forward to his story because I, too, enjoy a Cinderella romance!

Summary
Sophie Beckett had no idea she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famous masquerade ball—or that “Prince Charming” would be there waiting for her! Sophie has been condemned to the role of servant by her scornful stepmother, despite the fact that she is the daughter of an earl. She feels like royalty now, spinning in the powerful arms of the debonair and devastatingly attractive Benedict Bridgerton. Unfortunately, she understands that all enchantments must come to an end when the clock strikes midnight.

What was the name of the wonderful woman? Benedict has been blinded to the allures of any other since that beautiful night, except perhaps this attractive and weirdly familiar beauty clothed in housemaid’s clothes whom he feels driven to rescue from a most terrible predicament. He swears he’ll discover and marry his mysterious miss, but this stunning maid makes him weak with want. Will Benedict give up his one shot for a fairy tale love if he offers her his heart? (This is a summary from Goodreads.)

Review
After reading The Viscount Who Loved Me, I knew this novel couldn’t compare to Anthony’s narrative. And, to be honest, it didn’t work for me. Nonetheless, it was a delightful and entertaining read. In the books, Benedict always seemed a little drab to me. He lacked Anthony’s charm and sex appeal, and even Colin, the other brother whose narrative I’ll read next, was more prominent in the novels than Benedict. So, while I wasn’t dying to read his narrative, I was intrigued by Quinn’s portrayal of him and how he made the audience love him.

This is a true Cinderella story, from poverty to riches. If you enjoy Cinderella stories, this is the book for you! Sophie was fantastic as a wronged lady in distress. She was compassionate, caring, principled, and dedicated to her profession. I liked her right away and hoped she’d find her happily ever after with Benedict, even if it appeared doubtful for the most of the novel. Benedict was more difficult to deal with than Sophie. Sophie was likable, and I enjoyed watching her conquer her problems and defeat her cruel stepmother. Benedict, on the other hand, left a bad taste in my mouth.

I was thinking, “Kick his ass to the curb, Sophie!” for the majority of the book. A minor spoiler: Benedict spends 90% of the narrative begging Sophie to be his mistress instead of his ‘true love’ mystery women, while still hoping they will reappear in his life. That was a challenge for me. Sophie found it both frustrating and insulting. I know Benedict realises his wrong and seeks Sophie’s forgiveness in the end, and there was never any doubt in my mind that he loved Sophie, but I had a hard time getting there.

Although Sophie’s request to be his mistress seemed rational and appropriate given her social rank, I was puzzled by how he went about it. Benedict just didn’t seem to be able to accept no for an answer and couldn’t seem to let go of his mystery women. Because of this, I had a difficult time with Benedict. It wasn’t absolutely off-putting, but I was relieved when the narrative ended so I could move on to Colin’s, because I have a feeling Colin will be just as swoon-worthy for me as Anthony. This was still an excellent book; it wasn’t my favorite in the series so far, but it was still an enjoyable getaway with some memorable moments.

Sophie Beckett never dreamed she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball—or that “Prince Charming” would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight.

Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid’s garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy tale love?

This novel includes The 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story.
