2022 Canadian Scholarships for International students

Canadian scholarships are usually preferred by most international students because of reasons ranging from easier travel processes to flexible studies. We have compiled a list of ongoing scholarships in Canada 2021-2022 for Nigerians, international students, and other Africa developing countries. 

These scholarships include some fully funded and some are partly funded for both postgraduates and undergraduates for Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s, Ph.D., fellowships, etc. 

Canadian Scholarships for International students

The Canadian government has always been a major sponsor of these scholarships. Some private institutions in Canada also sponsor some other ones.

PEO International Peace Scholarship (IPS) 2022/2023 

The International Peace Scholarship Fund, established in 1949, is a program that provides scholarships for selected women from other countries for graduate study in the United States or Canada. Members of P.E.O. believe that education is fundamental to world peace and understanding. PEO’s projects are aimed to help women reach for the Stars.

Scholarship awarding is solely based upon demonstrated need and the award is not intended to cover all academic or personal expenses. At the time of application, the applicant is required to indicate additional financial resources adequate to meet her estimated expenses. 

Examples of additional resources are personal and family funds, tuition waivers, work scholarships, teaching assistantships, study grants, and other scholarships.

Host Institution: Choice institution of the candidate

Level/Field of study: An applicant must be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada

Award value: The maximum amount awarded to a student is $12,500. Lesser amounts may be awarded according to individual needs. Awards are announced in May. The amount of the PEO International scholarship will be divided into two payments to be distributed in August and December.

Eligibility Criteria

  • An applicant must be admitted or be qualified for admission to full-time graduate study and working toward a graduate degree in an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada.
  • To qualify for her first scholarship, an applicant must have at least a full year of coursework remaining, be enrolled, and be in residence for the entire school year.
  • Permanent residents and citizens of the United States or Canada who are students are not eligible.
  • Scholarship purposes do not include research, internships, or practical training unless it is combined with coursework. 
  • Awards cannot / are not to be used to pay past debts.
  • Doctoral students who have completed coursework and are working only on dissertations are not eligible as first-time applicants.
  • International students attending Cottey college are eligible to apply for a scholarship

Application Timeline:

  • Application closes 15th December 2021
  • March 1, 2022: Last day to submit completed application materials from applicants already enrolled in the graduate program and school for which their scholarship is intended.
  • April 1, 2022: Last day to submit completed application materials from applicants not yet enrolled in the graduate program or school for which the scholarship is intended. Also, the last day to submit completed application materials for applicants who will be attending Cottey College

University of British Columbia 2022-2023 Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award – Canada

The University of British Columbia recognizes the academic achievement of outstanding students from around the world by devoting more than $30 million annually to awards, scholarships, and other forms of financial support for international undergraduate students. The Outstanding International Student (OIS) awards are awarded to exceptional international students entering undergraduate programs at UBC only.

OIS Award is a one-time, merit-based entrance scholarship awarded to qualified students when they are offered admission to UBC. Students selected for this award show strength academically and display involvement outside of the classroom. 

It is a merit-based award. Consideration is based on your demonstrated academic achievement and your extracurricular involvement. 

The number and level of University of British Columbia scholarships awarded each year vary, depending on available funding. When you receive an award or scholarship, you join a community of engaged and supportive young leaders who enrich UBC with their diverse perspectives, involvement, and innovation. You’ll have the chance to grow, connect, research, and innovate.

UBC offers a wide range of opportunities inside and outside the classroom from co-ops and undergraduate research to clubs and study abroad to round out your degree and help you contribute to the university’s thriving community.

  • Demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and strong extracurricular involvement.
  • Must not be nominated for a need-and-merit-based International Scholars award.

  • Go to the University of British Columbia (UBC) to apply
  • If you apply to UBC by January 15, you will be automatically considered for the OIS Award.
  • You will be considered for this scholarship shortly after you receive an offer of admission to UBC. Scholarship decisions are made between mid-March to the end of April each year.

Mastercard Foundation 2021-2022 Scholars Program at McGill University  (Fully-Funded)

A central goal of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is to create a globally educated and highly qualified group of future leaders, who, upon graduation, can return to Africa to help foster the region’s development. 

McGill complements Scholars’ education with a comprehensive support system that includes mentorship, tailored support services, community service opportunities, and sustained programming relevant to their personal development and thus this partnership.

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Components: The scholarship, aside from covering full sponsorship, comprises of the following components

  • Leadership Development
  • Peer Mentorship
  • Faculty Mentorship and
  • Internships

Beneficiaries also receive guidance and funding for two internships upon return to their home countries during their studies. These internships aim to sustain the Scholars’ connection with their home countries and build a path toward meaningful employment post-graduation.

Eligibility Criteria

This program has no specific eligibility criteria. However, applicants for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill should note;

  • Selection will be by nomination based on departmental admission proceedings.
  • Scholarships are for scholars from sub-Saharan Africa
  • Prospective applicants can find the full list of MCF eligible programs here.
  • Applicants should have completed their first-degree program before applying to Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill
  • Application request should have the following information enclosed:
  1. University Transcript
  2. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  3. Short Personal Statement (max. 350 words).
  • A nominated applicant will be prompted to create an account on the uApply portal and share the username with the nominating department.

  • Candidates applying for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill must first apply for a course at McGill University to pursue a Masters (Non-thesis) program. Nominations and selections are thereafter made from candidates department applied to study.

Farouk and Dawn Ahamed 2021-2022 International Student Scholarships at the Wilfrid Laurier University – Canada

The Farouk and Dawn Ahamed International Student Scholarships offer full coverage of tuition fees of international students of successful international student candidates for the duration of their chosen course at the Wilfrid Laurier University in Canada.

Through the program, students from across the globe shall have access to quality undergraduate-level education. Wilfrid Laurier University will provide the educational fund for students to complete their education in Canada.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • An applicant of any undergraduate degree in all subject areas offered at the university is eligible for the opportunity.
  • Must be an international student
  • Aspiring scholars must have already been admitted into an undergraduate degree program at Wilfrid Laurier University.
  • Applicants must be overseas citizens.


  • Fall 2022 admission (Ontario high school students): January 13, 2022.
  • Fall 2022 admission (all other applicants): April 1, 2022.
  • Spring 2022 admission: March 17, 2022.
  • Winter 2022 admission: November 17, 2022.

Once you’ve picked the program you want to apply to and learned about your specific admissions requirements, you can apply through the Ontario Universities’ Application Centre (OUAC).

  • If you’re a current Ontario high school student, you’ll complete the 101 application form.
  • All other applicants, including transfer students and international applicants, can apply using the 105application form.

2. Check Your Email

It is important to check your email often because you will be contacted by email over the next few months. You should also make sure the email address you submitted to the Ontario Universities Application Centre (OUAC) is up-to-date 

Confirmation of Application

Once you have applied to Laurier, you will receive an email of confirmation Application information is processed in the order in which it is received from OUAC. If you do not receive a confirmation message within five days of applying, please check your junk mail first. If you have still not received our email, contact the school.

3.Log Into Your Applicant Portal Account

You’ll need to use your applicant portal to complete your application. Your confirmation of application email will contain your portal account login information.

You will be able to view your application status online through your portal account. You should also use your portal to view a list of documents we require for your application and to view when we receive your documents.

4. Submit Your Required Documents

You’ll find a list of documents we require to assess your application in the applicant portal. These may include transcripts and/or proof of English proficiency.

Lester B. Pearson International 2022-2023 Scholarship Program – Canada

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarships at the University of Toronto provide an unparalleled opportunity for outstanding international students to study at one of the world’s best universities in one of the world’s most multicultural cities.

Students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement and creativity and who are recognized as leaders within their school are designed for this scholarship program. Emphasis is specially placed on the impact the student has had on the life of their school and community, and their future potential to contribute positively to the global community.

The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarships are awarded annually, to recognize outstanding students from around the world, including international students studying at Canadian high schools. This is U of T’s most prestigious and competitive scholarship for international students. The Lester B. Pearson International Scholarships will cover tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for four years. The scholarship is tenable only at the University of Toronto.

Eligibility Criteria:

  •  Applicants must be
  • International students (i.e. a non-Canadian requiring a study permit);
  • Currently in the final year of secondary school or have graduated no earlier than June 2021;
  • Beginning studies at the University of Toronto in September 2022 (students already attending post-secondary studies cannot be considered; students starting their studies in January 2022 at another post-secondary institution cannot be considered).

Scholarship for your first choice of the program at U of T.  You may apply for several programs and may receive admission to them all; however, the  Lester B. Scholarship, if awarded to you, would be restricted to your first choice of the program at U of T at the time scholarship decisions are made.
  3. After nominations have been concluded and you have applied to the university, you can complete the online Lester B. Pearson Scholarship application.

Concordia Undergraduate Graduate Entrance Scholarships 2021/2022 for International Students

At Concordia University, competitive funding packages are offered at the time of admission, allowing students to focus on their research and studies. These funding packages may include awards that are generated by the operating funds of Concordia University and/or through the generosity of individual donors. 

These awards are often topped up with teaching and research assistantships, making the overall funding package financially sufficient and allowing students to finish their degrees in a timely manner.

Award value: $10,000 – $43,211.

Students wishing to benefit from these awards are encouraged to apply early for admission; there is no separate application process for graduate scholarships. Applicants are considered for this program automatically when they apply for admission at Concordia University at the official scholarship website

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program 2021-2022 for Doctoral Study

The Canadian Government established the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, in 2008 to strengthen Canada’s ability to attract and retain world-class doctoral students and establish Canada as a global center of excellence in research and higher learning.

Host Institution: Eligible Canadian Universities

Level/Field of study: Postgraduate

Award value:  $50,000 annually for three years.

Target group: International Students

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for a Vanier CGS, the candidate must:

  • Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or foreign students pursuing a doctoral degree at eligible Canadian universities
  • be nominated by only one Canadian institution, which must have received a Vanier CGS quota;
  • have achieved a first-class average, as determined by your institution, in each of the last two years of full-time study or equivalent. Candidates are encouraged to contact the institution for its definition of a first-class average,
  • be pursuing your first doctoral degree (including joint undergraduate/graduate research programs such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D. – if it has a demonstrated and significant research component). Note that only the Ph.D. portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;
  • intend to pursue, in the summer semester or the academic year following the announcement of results, full-time doctoral (or a joint graduate program such as MD/Ph.D., DVM/Ph.D., JD/Ph.D.) studies and research at the nominating institution; Note that only the Ph.D. portion of a combined degree is eligible for funding;
  • not have completed more than 20 months of doctoral studies as of May 1, 2021, and
  • must not hold, or have held, a doctoral-level scholarship or fellowship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC to undertake or complete a doctoral degree.
